Multiple motorcycle safety schools have reported a rise in the number of 50-plus people enrolling in classes with some reaching into their 70′s and 80′s. One such school says the older students say they were too busy with families and careers previously and are now in a position to try something different.

The mean age of motorcycle owners has risen to 40 from 33 just in the last decade. Partially due to younger riders aging but also due to older riders starting. This climb in age also increases the number of motorcycle deaths in grey riders. from a mere 5% in 1975 to nearly one-third of all motorcycle-driving deaths.

Knowing the risks of diminished functions due to aging, some of these grey riders choose to offset them with a compromise. They purchase three-wheelers, also called trikes. This helps eliminate the balance issues that may be present in older citizens.

Not only does purchasing a trike offset some of the physical limitations that these older riders may have, but their maturity also helps. They have a tendancy to ride a bit slower and not take as many risks as younger riders.
