Charges pending for driver who hit a 5-year-old in parking lot

A 5-year-old boy remains in critical condition this morning after being hit by a van in a parking lot of an apartment complex.

The accident occurred around 7 pm.  Police spokesman Harold Eley said witnesses told investigators that the child ran into the path of the minivan as it was pulling into the parking lot.  The driver of the van was an unidentified 37-year-old Newport News female.

The child was taken to a local hospital then later flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation,

Charges are pending against the driver.
