Another pedestrian has been knocked down and killed in Chesapeake, VA, the latest in a series of deaths in the city.

On January 28, 2012 at about 01:45 A.M police responded to reports of a woman being hit at the intersection of Military Hwy and Shell Road by a Mercury Cougar.

Police said a vehicle was traveling west on Military Hwy near Shell Road when the pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing, walked in the roadway and was struck.

Police said the section of Military Hwy is not well lit.  The victim was taken by medics to Norfolk General Hospital; She later died and was identified as 35 year old Jennifer Fischer of Onawa Lane in Chesapeake, VA. An investigation is ongoing. Police say neither excess speed nor alcohol were factors in this accident.

As experienced Chesapeake, VA car accident injury attorneys, we are concerned about the large number of pedestrian deaths in Chesapeake. On Jan. 10, 2011, we reported on the death of a 45-year-old man, who was hit by a pickup truck in Chesapeake.

Chesapeake, has seen a spate of pedestrian deaths. On October 3, 2011 popular Chesapeake crossing guard Lovette Person was killed when she was hit by a driver outside Western Branch Intermediate School.

Just because a pedestrian may be wearing dark clothing in a badly lit area or not using a designated crosswalk, it does not mean the driver is off the hook. In some cases wrongful death lawsuits have been successfully brought in such circumstances.

See our recent article on crosswalk injuries for further details on the law as it relates to pedestrian deaths and injuries.
