Honda Recalls 126,000 Motorcycles over Fire Hazard

About 126,000 touring motorcycles are to be recalled by Honda Motor Co. because of a brake problem that could lead to a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Honda has detailed recalls that cover 2001-10 and 2012 GL1800 models sold as Honda Goldwings, according to the Journal Sentinel.

This defect means a bike’s rear brake could still be partially engaged after the rider released it.

“Continued riding with the rear brake engaged/dragging may generate enough heat to cause the rear brake to catch fire,” the company stated.

Back in July 2010 the company said a rider heard a small explosion and saw a fire in the rear brake area after parking his motorcycle.

Honda is investigating about 26 US complaints including two fires. The defect does not appear to have resulted in any injuries.

The recall comes in the same week as Ford detailed a recall of 129,000 Ford Fusions and Mercury Milans because of a defect with wheel studs that could lead to wheels falling off cars.
