A school bus and a car have been involved in an accident in York County,  the latest in a series of collisions to involve a school bus in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

A passenger in the car was taken to a local hospital after the crash on Cook Road on Jan. 5, 2012. Fortunately, the York County High School bus had no passengers on board.

The passenger in the car was taken to a hospital following the accident. Police said the passenger’s injuries were not life-threatening, the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily reported. Even injuries reported as not likely to cause death can be quite serious.

It’s unclear from published reports so far who was the at-fault driver in this crash. However, a number of recent accidents involving school buses have posed questions over how they were being driven. In any event, a passenger usually has a valid case against the insurance company for either or both drivers, as someone clearly made a mistake in their operation of a vehicle leading to the crash.

In 2011, we reported on how in Chesapeake, VA nine students were taken to a local hospital after a school bus crashed into a ditch near Hickory High School.
On the same day in Hampton, VA a bus driver was cited after a school bus hit six parked cars in the parking lot of Bethel High School on the morning of Dec. 12.
As experienced Norfolk, Virginia-based mass transit injury attorneys, we are concerned about the large numbers of students who are injured each year on school buses.

Starting in 2012, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has required lap-shoulder belts to be fitted on new smaller school buses. But the issue has been left up in the air. It’s up to states to set rules for the large school buses that take the vast majority of children to and from school.
