Virginia personal injury attorney, Jim Hurley, reports that a recent survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finds that many drivers of motor vehicles regularly use their cell phones while driving, including texting, which can lead to injuries or deaths in motor vehicle crashes. The survey concluded that drivers younger than 25 are more likely than older drivers to read or send emails or text messages while driving. These younger drivers feel that this practice is not dangerous to their ability to drive but feel it is only dangerous when other drivers email or text while driving.

Moreover, the survey concluded that over 80% of passengers in a car, truck or motorcycle feel that a driver who emails or texts while driving is very unsafe. In 2010, over 3,000 deaths were caused in car crashes, truck accidents or motorcycle crashes because of driver distractions which include such things as texting or emailing by a driver on their cell phone.

Virginia law prohibits all drivers from texting while driving and it is illegal for drivers under the age of 18 to even use a cell phone.
