City Council backed $63,000 in improvements to boost safety along Shore Drive Tuesday. The improvements will include: more streetlights, crosswalks and pedestrian cross signals.

In an eight year timeframe, ten pedestrians have been killed on this road.

The city recently reduced the speed limit on Shore Drive between Pleasure House and North Great Neck roads on a six-month trial basis.

Virginia Beach has also lowered the speed limit to 35 mph west of the Lesner Bridge after the recent pedestrian death. Beach leaders plan to evaluate the effectiveness of that plan to determine whether it will be a permanent fix.

Additional improvements could involve constructing more pedestrian walkways and bike paths and upgrading intersections largely east of the bridge, will cost the city $11.2 million. Currently, only a small fraction of that cost, about $450,000, is funded in the city’s budget. The improvements also aren’t scheduled to be completed until 2018.
