A Norfolk man who was driving car that drove into a house, killing three passengers, faces charges of aggravated involuntary manslaughter while driving drunk.

According to the Virginian-Pilot a Norfolk grand jury indicted 30-year-old Craig A. Watson on three felony charges. The Aug. 11 wreck also seriously injured two passengers.

Police reports show, Watson was driving with five passengers around 3:20 am when the car missed a curve. The vehicle tore through a light pole, stop sign, guardrail and tree before running into the porch of a house.

Police said speed and alcohol contributed to the fatal car crash, which killed 18-year-old Paris Shorter of Virginia Beach, 19-year-old Marquita  Walker of Hampton and 29-year-old Karnell  Faulkner of Chesapeake.

Three people are dead and four others injured after a single-car crash on Route 55, according to State Police.

Police say the crash happened Sunday afternoon, when the driver, Robert Louer, of an SUV carrying seven family members ran off the road and then struck a tree.

Edward Nichols III, 64, of Purcellville died in the crash along with his wife, 63-year-old Karen Nichols, and 90-year-old Doris Louer. Three passengers and the driver, Robert Louer of FL were injured and taken to hospitals. There was no information on their injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.  Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said in a statement that everyone in the vehicle was wearing seat belts and alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

It’s important that backseat riders wear their belts not only for their own safety but for the front passengers.

Even though seat belt use in the front seat has steadily grown over the years, lawmakers are concerned by the gap and in some instances, decline in seat belt use in the back seat.

Rear seat belt use stood at a 74 percent national average in 2008, compared with 83 percent for front-seat passengers, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 25 states and the District of Columbia require front and rear passengers to buckle up.

One man died and four others were injured after a truck smashed into oncoming traffic about 4 p.m. Friday in Newport News, according to a news release.

Witnesses told police that the driver, James Campbell, of a Ford F-150 truck was slumped over his steering wheel as his vehicle traveled and went into the path of oncoming traffic.

The truck sideswiped a van and struck two cars, the release said. Another vehicle crashed into one of the other cars.

All five drivers were taken to an area hospital and treated for injuries.

Campbell, 70, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

 21-year-old Shannon Goldston was charged with malicious wounding, hit-and-run property damage, driving a motor vehicle while license is suspended or revoked, and reckless driving, according to Suffolk police reports.

Around 8:30am police were called after 27-year-old George Gates, Jr. was struck by a car.  Goldston had then fled the scene, while Gates was flown to the hospital for treatment.

Witnesses told police that Gates had been struck by the car intentionally during a domestic argument.

Ford is recalling Windstar minivans models from the years: 1998 to 2003.   462,750 Ford Windstar minivans have been recalled due to a rear axle that can fracture over time when exposed to corrosive materials used on roads in cold-weather areas.
 
The corrosion and stress can lead to cracks that can result in a “complete fracture” of the rear axle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If this happens while the van is driving, it could lead to an automobile accident.
 
10 complaints of completely cracked rear axles are on NHTSA’s complaint website for just the 1998 model year. All were from 2009 or 2010, and a few mentioned mileage of 90,000 miles.
 
Ford will begin the recall on or before Sept. 27, and all service and parts will be covered free of charge if needed.

A fatal single car crash yesterday claimed the life of a 59-year-old Courtland woman.

The driver of the vehicle, Patricia Hornok, was traveling just before 1 a.m. when she ran off the road to the right, crossed a ditch and struck a high bank.

The vehicle overturned and Hornok was ejected.   She was not wearing her seatbelt.

She died at the scene.

The accident is under investigation.

Two people suffered serious injuries last Wednesday afternoon after crashing into a tree, officials said.

The crash which happened around 2pm after the victims were traveling west on Providence Road in a 2000 Hyundai Elantra when the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerved off the road to the right and struck a tree head-on.

Firefighters responded and had to cut the driver from the vehicle because he’d been pinned inside, said Officer Adam Bernstein, a police spokesman.

The driver, a 23-year-old male, and a passenger where transported to a local hospital for treatment for serious injuries, Bernstein said.

Speed was a factor in the crash, and neither victim was wearing a seatbelt, Bernstein said.

No criminal charges have been filed. The automobile accident remains under investigation.

Fatal car crash on Wednesday morning when a sport utility vehicle overturned on a Surry County roadway.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya of state police said the man was driving a 2001 GMC Jimmy on Route 613 around 4:40 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and went off the road. When he attempted to return to the roadway, the SUV flipped, crushing the roof on the driver’s side.

The motorist has not been identified to the media.

The accident remains under investigation.

Chesapeake has some of the most car accident areas in Southern Hampton Roads.  In an effort to elevate some of those crashes, cameras will start taking pictures of red-light runners at Battlefield Boulevard/Atlantic Avenue and Campostella Road this week.

Following a 30-day grace period that begins Friday, drivers caught violating traffic lights in the north and southbound lanes of the intersection known as Edmunds Corner could find a notice for a $50 fine in the mailbox.

“There are a lot of intersections in the pipeline,” he said, and 28 up for consideration. Eight under consideration are intersections along Battlefield Boulevard: Kempsville Road, Medical Parkway, Volvo Parkway, Mount Pleasant Road, Wal Mart Way, Cedar Road, the Chesapeake Expressway and Edmunds Corner.

The Dominion Boulevard- Great Bridge Boulevard intersection also made the list. Police reported 53 crashes there in 2008, making it the worst in three Hampton Roads cities.

Site selection is based on number of automobile accidents and traffic violations and the ease in which officers can enforce the site.
