Chesapeake, VA Car Accident Lawyer Report – Virginia Bill Clamps down on Cell Phone use by Teen Drivers

By John Cooper, Chesapeake Injury Lawyer

Cell phones are one of the most significant factors in distracted driving accidents. And teens are among the biggest offenders.

Now a new bill has cleared the Virginia Senate that could lead to teens being ticketed if they are using a cell phone after police stop them for another offence, the Virginian-Pilot reported.

This bill tightens the restrictions on the use of cellphones by provisional license holders, meaning enforcement agencies could stop them simply for using their phone while operating a vehicle.

Fairfax County’s Sen. George Barker said his bill was an effective way to protect teenage drivers and improve road safety for other users.

As experienced Virginia (VA) car accident injury attorneys we welcome any measures to help prevent distracted driving.

The more research carried out into cell phone use the more apparent its dangers become. In late 2011 we reported on a report by the National Transportation Safety Board that concluded all cell phone use behind the wheel was dangerous and states should take action to bring in prohibitions.

Teens are particularly vulnerable to distracted driving and other dangers on the road due to their inexperience. A recent report suggested more restrictions should be brought in on driving licenses for teenagers.
