Do Not Drink and Drive

By Jim Hurley

Recently, an article appeared in our local paper, that covers the Hampton Roads area in Virginia which includes the cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Suffolk and the surrounding areas, that talked about the huge number of people that were charged with DUI or drinking and driving. Even though a huge media campaign has been launched against drinking and driving, people are still drinking and driving.

As a personal injury lawyer, I have represented clients who have been injured because of drunken drivers who caused auto, truck or motorcycle accidents. A drunken driver can cause serious injuries to people who are driving or people who are passengers that can cause not only major injuries but also suffering, inconvenience and a major disruption of your life.

The consequences of driving while intoxicated can be devastating not only to the other individuals that are hurt in a motor vehicle accident but also can destroy the life of the person who foolishly decides to get behind the wheel after drinking alcoholic beverages. Not only will the drunken driver face criminal charges that could lead to jail as well as other severe punishment but that person could also face lawsuits that could cripple his financial situation.

Even though our society tries to eliminate drinking and driving through our laws, educational material and other resources, people are still drinking and driving. What can we do to prevent driving while impaired with alcohol?

As a lawyer who has represented injured people by drunken drivers, I have personally seen the terrible ramifications of people that drive while intoxicated and hurt innocent people. The following needs to be done to continue to combat this terrible problem:

  • Continue passing and enforcing laws against drinking and driving and
  • Spend money to educate everybody that driving while impaired with alcohol will not be acceptable behavior.

Driving and drinking must stop so that we can avoid the horrible results that lead to injuries and even death to innocent people.
