Motorcycle fatalities higher this summer then in all of 2008

In southern Hampton Roads over twice as many people have been killed in motorcycle accidents this summer than in all of 2008.  There have been 13 motorcycle fatalities in the five cities this year alone, while in 2008, there were a total of 6 motorcycle fatalities.  Reports show that in 2007 there were 10 motorcycle deaths and in 2006 there were seven.

The VAHSO reports that approximately half of all fatal motorcycle crashes involve automobiles.

The three top reasons for motorcycle crashes in 2008:  failure to maintain control, following too closely and exceeding the speed limit.    Many accidents are caused by other driver’s failure to see a motorcycle in traffic.
