Virginia Beach, VA Medical Malpractice Lawyer Report – Lawsuit Claims Misdiagnosis Led to Hospital Death of West Virginia Man

By John Cooper, Virginia Beach Medical Malpractice Attorney

A failure to properly diagnose a medical condition is the cause of many medical malpractice lawsuits.

In a current case in West Virginia (WV) involving St. Francis Hospital and some of its physicians, the suit is alleging a failure to diagnose a condition that led to the death of a 67-year-old Charleston, WV man in 2007.

The Charleston Daily Mail reported the lawsuit was filed by Michael Dunnavant, the son of Clarence Leroy Dunnavant, who was suffering from multiple sclerosis. Clarence went into St. Francis Hospital for treatment for a urinary tract infection. The lawsuit alleges he died because doctors failed to properly diagnose and treat a bowel perforation.

Michael DelGiudice, an attorney for Michael Dunnavant, told jurors at the trial that the family became increasingly concerned as patient’s condition deteriorated.

“They asked repeatedly for a doctor to examine him, but nurses only conferred with a physician by phone until about 3 a.m,” the Charleston Daily Mail reported.

As an experienced Virginia Beach, VA medical malpractice attorney, I’m concerned to read about this case because it appears the medical professionals ignored the concerns of the family until it was too late.

All too often we see medical professionals overly focused on a diagnosed condition to the point that they miss an undiagnosed condition.

And when hospitals do make mistakes they routinely fail to report them. Recently our attorneys reported on a federal report that found hospital incident reporting systems captured only about14 percent of the patient harm events experienced by Medicare beneficiaries.

Given this background it’s hardly surprising that the medical malpractice lawsuits keep on being filed.
